What does NYLF/NS mean?
NYLF/NS stands for National Youth Leadership on National Security.
NYLF/NS is a program offers students an inside look at the many opportunities available, as well as providing interaction with highly regarded, senior civilian policy makers and military officers. The program is a week long and is held in D.C. What makes this programs unique is that teens all over the country with all different backgrounds.
Day 1: I am traveling across the country to spend a week with people I have never met complete strangers. I arrived late noon in D.C and was rushed to hotel so I can make the check in time. When I reached the hotel I was taken to my hotel room where I promptly meet my roommates.
Jesus Lozoya- A Mexican from Bullhead City, Arizona
Wesley Cade Schneider IV- A whiteboy from Franklin, Tennessee
Our room was ethnically diverse and geography.
Day 2: We went to our assigned groups where we met more people from around country and in our groups we would learn about American policy on foreign affairs. Our first activity was to meet one of the senior policy makers on foreign affairs. We walked into the hall where would have a chance to ask and listen to how policies are made and how they become implemented in the government. Then we were able to ask questions on almost anything about his job like who did he get to his position and if he enjoyed his job.
Day 3: My group left to go D.C and have a field day in our countries capital. The first place I went to was the Supreme Court where I was able to be in the courtroom and listen to a couple cases. I don’t really remember what the cases where about but they all had the same vibe. All the cases made the air heavy and it became hard to breath. The cases all had a very serious tone. Later I went to meet California’s congressman I was sadly told that he had a lot of meetings and we had to cancel our meeting however I received a pin.
Day 4: My group broke up into our specializations. I went to the intelligence community section to learn about how America gathers intelligence and what it does with that intelligence. It was really interesting I was able to meet the ex-directors of NSA, FBI, NCIS they call had something to say about the organization they worked for they talked about they do on daily basis.
Day 5: I went to Marine Corps Base, Quantico and watched a dude get attacked by a dog.
Pretty sweet
Day 6: We had a large simulation where we had to come up with a foreign policy if North Korea were to attack South Korea. I was in charge gathering intelligence and how should we interpret the data and I would have to present it to the president. At the end the policy we made was that we would destroy North Korea if they showed one act of aggression it would be over.
Day 7: We all had to leave this day. I said good bye to all the friends I made during the week
