FLI (Future Leaders Institute) is a program that allows youth in high school to use there passion to change the society in a positive way.
I was in the program as a freshman with my friend Kyle Mathews. Our passion at the time was eating. I understand that it may not seem we were not the most thoughtful teens but we were very passionate about helping small children. We both were aware that there were children around the world who had large problems.
Kyle and I decided that we would want to combine our passion about eating and turn into something that could help out children around the world specially child soldiers in Africa. Kyle and I learned about modern day slavery by an older learner in the program years before us. She informed us that there are plays in the world children where children are forced to fight for wars they have nothing to do with. Kyle and I knew that we wanted to help children. We were going to raise money for child soldiers in Africa. We would raise money by selling food. We started to plan it out.
Week one: Told Milt (our FLI teacher) what we wanted to do and how we were going about doing it.
Week two: We contacted the organization we were going to give the money too.
Week three: We sent out our email to the community about our lunch and where the money was going to.
Week four: Bought all of the plates, spoons and forks.
Week five: We held out lunch in ACLC and raised over 300 dollars for our charity.
We also wrote up our report and give the money to Milt.
Sadly our money was stolen from Milt’s desk.
Kyle and I learned some very valuable lesson about organization. The largest lesson we both learned was that if want something done you do it yourself. People would ask if we both needed help but we always said no because we both felt we would be able to do it faster and more effective then asking people.
